So I’ve gotten almost no questions about my music style, influences, and my favourite artists, so I’d like to state them upfront just in case someone wants to know.
I’ll update this whenever I feel like it.
Music Style
I like to think of myself as a hybrid electro-indie-pop artist. What do I mean by that?
I always found indie music exciting. They often convey themes other than traditional love songs found in pop, they often feature impactful acoustic drum lines, and they’re generally more interesting to me. Also, the lyrics genuinely feel impactful.
I also found pop songs kinda interesting. They can sometimes be something other than the same four chords. (Sometimes, I do succomb to four-chords syndrome, but I like to think I try not to.)
Electro music has also been something interesting to me. I grew up watching videos of Geometry Dash to pass the time, so a lot of artists and their choices really influenced my music style.
Musical Influences
As a little kid, I never really liked listening to music. There was some sort of artificialness to it all, and I also didn’t like purely acoustic music. Also, my mom and dad exclusively listened to classical music – not my type of jam, but I didn’t really have a choice. This changed when I turned around the age of 12, and I got access to my dad’s Walkman. Around the age of 15, I learned what Spotify was, and that further broadened my music style. This shaped me to who I am today – someone who tries to create a hybrid between electronic synthesizers and acoustic instruments to create unique sounds. With that being said, my musical influences are:
- Madilyn Mei – her songs genuinely resonate with me, and I’m starting to write songs about people now that I have some friends there to help me.
- Claire Rosinkwitz – even though she’s a relatively new artist, the instrumental backing really cemented how I wanted the acoustics to sound. Slightly poppy, slightly gritty, and almost always fresh.
- Sara Kays – “Remember That Night?” was definitely an influence in what I wanted my songs to sound like. I want each and every one to tell a story, no matter how difficult it is. Even my instrumental songs try and tell a story about something. Granted, you’d have to read these micro-blogs, but I try my best.
- The Mowgli’s – The rhythm they use has somewhat influenced how I produce music. And I’m not sure how I feel about it. Maybe it’s just the percussionist inside of me.
- Oh Honey – Ok, this is a bit of a stretch, but I like how their hooks are always memorable. (Personally, my favourite song by them is “Don’t You Worry.”) That’s why I try and make every song distinctive enough while still retaining a melody that’s easily recognizable and memorable.
I think that’s it.
Favourite Artists
Okay, so the earlier ones had some influence as to who I am as a musician. After contemplating, I don’t think I can say these artists have had much of an effect on me, but at least they sound good.
- Chxrlotte – honestly, her songs have really vibed with me. Now that I think about it, her entire discography is kinda similar to the topic of my debut album. uhhh you didn’t see that
- Sabrina Carpenter – honestly, there’s something I like about each album of hers. They all feel different. Personally, my favourite album of hers is EVOLution.
Goals
I have some quite lofty goals for myself.
- Working with someone to create music. I’ve never been able to collaborate because I didn’t have people to help me with stuff before, but now, I think that’s possible.
- One of my major goals is to work with someone like Madilyn Mei. I know that seems weird.
- Once I’m gone, I just hope that someone remembers me.
Final Notes
I hope whoever reads this can find out which artist truly inspires them. (It doesn’t even have to be me! I just listed a bunch of artists that I look up to.)
In my mind, it really doesn’t matter what songs you listen to. Society may judge you (and so will your family – if you’re still in contact), but it’s your musical preference and that’s unique to you.
The final thing I have yet to figure out is how to release music and do all that without having to tell my family about the subject matters behind the music. But that’s a future me problem!
